Bill Davis: Miracle Worker

It wasn’t long ago that Eagles’ fans were chastising Chip Kelly for his decision to hire 3-4 guru Billy Davis as his defensive coordinator. After all, Davis had just finished a 2012 season in which he helped coached the vaunted Cleveland Browns’ defense to the 23rd best mark in yardage allowed.

But, in his first season at the helm as the defensive coordinator of the Eagles, Davis has dramatically turned public opinion. Once thought of as the weak link on the Eagles’ coaching staff. Davis is now considered one of the best assistants in the game as his 3-4 defense continues to improve with every passing week.

The Eagles may be 31st in the league in yards allowed. But, they are making headway on the scoreboard. The Eagles’ defense has not allowed more than 21 points in a game since a week two loss to San Diego. Last week, in the cold and snowy tundra of Lincoln Financial Field, Davis’ defense allowed just one offensive touchdown to a previously vaunted Detroit Lions offensive attack.

At 8-5, the Eagles lead the NFC East by one game and most of the credit has gone to Kelly’s offense. In the end, it could be Davis’ defense that is the true key to Philadelphia’s success. Should the Eagles win the division and advance to the postseason, it will be the defense that they’ll need to rely on to lead them past offensive powers Carolina, Seattle, and New Orleans.

The Eagles’ defense has been bend-but-don’t-break this season. Come January, they’ll need to be more than just flexible.
