Flyers-Maple Leafs Tonight; JVR Returns to Philly

ImageThe Flyers, fresh off two victories in their last three games, return to the Wells Fargo Center to welcome an old friend back to Philadelphia. James van Riemsdyk, the #2 pick in the 2007 draft, returns to Philadelphia as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Traded to Toronto last summer for D Luke Schenn, JVR has enjoyed the best start to his young career, tallying 11 goals and 4 assists in 19 games. JVR’s career high in goals with Philadelphia was 21 in 2010-11, when he appeared to emerge as a bonafide young star in the team’s short postseason-run.

Unfortunately for the New Jersey native, he never managed to stay healthy enough to warrant the long-term contract the team gave him following that season. JVR slumped to 24 points in 43 games last season before being shipped to Toronto for the league’s leading hitter, Schenn.

So far, van Riemsdyk is enjoying his time spent on Phil Kessel’s line with the Leafs. He has three multiple goal games, including a 2 goal performance against Buffalo on Thursday. I would expect to see Ilya Bryzgalov in net again for Philadelphia, as Brian Boucher remains the worst backup in the league. Toronto will likely counter with Ben Scrivens, who is 5-5, .929, 2.19 on the season.
